The 2011 comic series Flashpoint by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert sees Barry Allen wake up in an alternate timeline where he never became the Flash, the lives of those around him are radically different, and the Justice League was never formed as the founding members lives played out differently. Bruce Wayne’s parents survived the alley robbery, Kal-El wasn’t found or raised by the Kent’s in Smallville, and Cyborg works for the government filling the American hero role of Superman. Meanwhile Wonder Woman and Aquaman became the leaders of their people, and have engaged in war against each other, both conquering and destroying Western Europe in the process. Without his powers and aware of all the changes made to history, Barry tries fix what has happened before time sets and he forgets about the original timeline.
A pretty faithful animated adaption Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox was released in 2013, and the CW series The Flash attempted to do a minor take on the story line that lasted a couple episodes during the third season of the show, a live-action version of the comic story seemed unlikely due to the amount of big name characters that appear. Interestingly almost all of the key characters in the original comic story have already been cast in the DCEU, and to be honest the ones that haven’t aren’t really essential and could just be excluded from the story.
Now the Flash movie has been riddled with production problems, jumping from director to director, and after some time undergoing a page-one rewrite. Many believed Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who were originally set to direct would return after departing the Star Wars Han Solo movie midway through production, but are now going to work on Disney’s Artemis Fowl adaption titled Artemis. Unfortunately no director has been confirmed as of yet, however Robert Zemeckis is thought to be the front runner to helm the project. Thankfully the new script is now finished for the Ezra Miller led DCEU film.
It was announced at this years San Diego Comic-Con that the title of the Flash movie had been changed to Flashpoint, based on the popular comic book story arc. We only know a few things for sure, the plot will take place after the events of Justice League, and additionally both Ray Fisher as Victor Stone / Cyborg, and Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman have been reported to be in the film.
Hopefully in the coming months we will begin to hear story details, lock in a solid director, and possibly confirm Ben Affleck, Jason Mamoa, and Henry Cavill as their onscreen characters of Batman, Aquaman, and Superman, as well as The Walking Dead stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan as Bruce Wayne’s parents Thomas and Martha Wayne all of whom appeared, even if briefly, in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
I for one would love to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Flashpoint Thomas Wayne, and after his portrayal of The Comedian in Justice League Director Zack Snyder’s Watchmen many fans would agree this could be the reason Morgan was cast in the role of Wayne senior. If you an unfamiliar with the Flashpoint story arc I highly recommend checking it out, its a really fun tale with some great twists and unveils.
For now, Flashpoint will star Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, and Billy Crudup as Henry Allen.
The Flash will next appear in Justice League which hits cinemas November 17th this year!
