‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ Trailer Breakdown

With New York Comic Con happening this weekend a whole bunch of trailers were expected to make their way online, over the next couple days keep your eyes peeled for new Justice League and Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailers as they are reportedly coming. First up though is a look at the sci-fi monster mash Pacific Rim: Uprising, which is the sequel to the 2013 Guillermo del Toro blockbuster Pacific Rim. The movie saw Earth at war with colossal monsters known as Kaiju that invaded through an inter-dimensional portal located on the Pacific Ocean floor, humanity created equally as large mechanical humanoid units known as Jaegers to defend the world and prevent the apocalypse.

Pacific Rim was a modern take on the classic Japanese mecha and Kaiju movies that del Toro grew up on, he drew on and incorporated many tropes of the genres into the original, and this new trailer suggests Uprising will be doing it again.

Guillermo del Toro is known to ask for huge budget increases on sequels and unsurprisingly with the budget dropping from the generous $190 million of the first movie to $150 million for the sequel this time director Steven S. DeKnight has led the project, however del Toro worked closely on the project through the early development stages and remained on-board as a producer.

Here is the trailer:

So what do we know so far and what have we learned from this trailer?

Ten years have past since the final battle of the last film, the PPDC’s upgraded jaeger program is in full swing and ready for any attack under the lead of the Marshal Quan, who we unfortunately see get killed during an attack on a base at 0:49. When the Kaiju threat does reemerge Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), who we see at 0:55 along side the also returning Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) and members of the PPDC, reaches out to her adoptive brother Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) to gather and train a new generation of jaeger pilots.

At 1:01 a scrappy looking scavenged jaeger bursts through a warehouse door and is being piloted by jaeger hacker Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny), little is know of the character of her role.

We get a quick look at what appear to be Kaiju jaeger hybrids at 0:45 and 0:52 as they have Kaiju style spikes and tendrils that glow blue but are clad in white armor and firing missiles. At 1:23 we see a swarm of human sized technology clad Kaiju rampaging towards a team of grounded pilots, and shortly after in the trailer the swarm along with the red, blue, and green regular Kaiju pull a Megazord and combine into one huge problem for the heroes. Lets not forget the several shots featuring jaeger on jaeger fights in very different locations, it does look like the bad guys have it all this time around, monsters, robots, and robot monsters.

While thats about all we can pinpoint or know for sure as story points are scarce, some of the interesting new things being teased in the trailer have been rumored since a sequel was hinted at, and based on genre tropes will likely be the case. A villainous mecha that has similarities with the protagonist usually appears, ie Mechagodzilla, so the orange lit dual blade jaeger is most likely in league with the Kaiju and is their creators version of a jaeger inspired by the original Gipsy Danger. Additionally del Toro spoke in interviews after the first movies release that a sequel could feature jaeger Kaiju hybrids that appear to show up in the trailer!

The official synopsis reads:

The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

The Jaegers will be fighting their way back into cinemas March 23, 2018. The first Pacific Rim sits at 71% on the tomatometer.
